Much has changed for Chrisette Michele in the three years since her last release; she has admitted to developing an addiction to unhealthy food and gaining 40 pounds in the process, leading her to delve deeper into her conflicted state of mind for lyrical content and forcing her to confront aspects of her life that may have been suppressed during previous records. The cathartic process of recording Better makes the title an apt description of Michele herself, and results in a record that is open and ultimately uplifting.

bilal-a-love-surreal reviewrate3 Bilal returns to drop A Love Surreal; his third official album [fourth if you count the shelved but leaked Love 4 Sale]. Having established himself as one of the finest vocalists this side of the millennium, his dynamic vocal range has always been a hit with his fans, even if between the years of 2001 and 2010 he didn’t release any new material for them to gravitate towards, having lost inspiration. However this, his second album in three years, might go far to prove that he’s well and truly found his creative spark once again.

shafiq_cover-thumb Upon playing Shafiq Husayn’s debut solo LP “Shafiq En A-Free-ka” to my 65 year old father (possibly the world’s oldest Sa-Ra fan) his first reaction was, “This isn’t Sa-Ra, is it?” Shafiq whether intentionally or naturally has departed from the “Sa-Ra” sound. A unique sound trademarked half a decade ago when Sa-Ra burst through our speakers with the aptly named “Glorious.” A lo-fi playalistic exploration into digital psychedelia, creating a sonic palette that’s instantly recognisable to its fans.
