In just a short period Jessie Jhas achieved so much and with the latest news it seems that there's no stopping the ambitious 24-year old. After announcing her 2013 Nice To Meet You arena tour last month, the chart-topping British singer and songwriter has revealed she will be releasing her first official autobiography of the same name in September.
Ever since the start of the year, Jessica Cornish - better known by her stage name Jessie J - has been poised to take 2011 by storm, named the BBC Sound of 2011 and crowned the winner of the BRITS Critics' Choice Awards in January and February respectively.
With only three months of the year gone [the third's not even fully spent], the 22-year old singer/songwriter from Redbridge, UK has done exactly that; with a UK number one single already to her name ("Price Tag," featuring B.o.B, which also charted at number one in Scotland, New Zealand and in Ireland), her recently released debut album Who You Are [which we're about to delve into] charting at number two on the UK album charts and landing the highly-coveted musical guest gig on the legendary comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live.
We all know that Jessie J can sing and will sing the best of them out of the park. We also all know she can pen some pretty good Pop songs, having already written for Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown. With much of the album already on her YouTube channel for months and months prior to the release of the album, we already had an idea that Jessie J’s debut album was going to be pretty alright still.
However, even though YouTube recordings of you singing songs in your bathroom or apartment might sound good at the time, translating those songs into records on a studio album is another thing entirely. Does the BBC Sound of 2011 and 2011 BRITS Choice Awards winner deliver the goods on her full-length debut album?
On 25th January MTV brought their Blackberry sponsored Brand New for 2011 project from the TV and internet screens and live to North London’s KOKO. The first night of the MTV live shows, the sold-out concert featured an urban line-up with Tinchy Stryder headlining [pictured above].
I’m continually impressed with how many mobile phone and technology companies are beginning to understand the real commercial prowess their technology can enable. Blackberry, who’ve long-recognised that their unique selling point is communication, invited audience members to add the event’s special Blackberry Messenger pin to send messages, which appeared on a big screen between performances. Performances were also segued with VTs of the Brand New for 2011 candidates, which include two of the night’s acts, RD and Jessie J.
It was as rainy as you could possibly imagine, a typical Monday night in Kings Cross, London - rush hour, glum faced people everywhere - but it was most definitely not a dampener on the spirits of those queuing up outside Scala eagerly awaiting to watch the phenomenal Jessie J perform.
If you have not yet heard of Jessie yet the chances are you've been hiding under a rock. Already hugely successful as a songwriter, Jessie has written songs for Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys as well as writing Miley Cyrus’ huge No. 1 Billboard smash in the states “Party In The U.S.A."
However, songwriting is just one of the many dimensions when it comes to Jessie J’s talent. At the tender age of just 22, the singer possesses one of the most powerfully unique and controlled voices to come out of the UK in a long time.
