Loyal fans know Estelle as a vibrant female rapper who started her musical ventures in 2004 with The 18th Day and went on to release her second album, the gold-certified Shine, in 2008. Both albums received a great response, making the British singer/occasional rapper a force to be reckoned with. Having already made her mark on her home turf of the UK, it was time to take her name and achievements to the U.S. Showing no fear whilst being so far away from home, the singer has made a mark in the States since meeting John Legend and signing to Atlantic/Homeschool Records. After making her first chart appearance with the Kanye West-assisted single "American Boy," the success that was to follow was set in stone. Now with a U.S. tour, several accolades and TV appearances all complete, her third studio album, All Of Me, is out in the open.

On Thursday 1st July Janelle Monae brought Metropolis to a small venue in East London. Before Thursday night’s show could be officially announced, it was already sold out - and by the end of the show, it was obvious why. Through the crowd there was a current of energy derived from an unspoken notion that we were about to witness something great. Packed like sardines into East London’s Hoxton Bar & Grill we all knew withstanding unbearable heat in the cramped, over-filled space was a small condition when baring witness to Janelle Monae’s “Emotion Picture”. However, even I wasn’t prepared for exactly what we witnessed.

janelle_monae_singing6 I can't for the life of me remember how I first came across Janelle Monae. She appeared on several Outkast affiliated projects in '05 but I don't think I paid much attention to them - it was her EP that caught my ear a few years ago. Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase was a strong but short set of seven fusions of rock, pop, soul and funk, quietly introducing this flawless voice, unique songwriter and theatrical performer to the world.
