2011 saw a busy year for Delilah; after supporting British drum’n’bass/dubstep producers Chase & Status on their nationwide tour, the single “Time” (which appears on their album, co-written by Delilah) was released, after which the London singer joined Maverick Sabre as main support act on his UK tour.
Following the September release of her first EP, entitled Go, which spawned the single of the same name, 2012 is penned to be pinnacle year for Delilah’s career. SoulCulture reviewer Billi John headed down to North London venue KOKO on Tuesday night (April 24) to check out Delilah’s headline show and see what the hype’s about.
After an energetic performance from veteran Ms. Dynamite got the crowd hyped, with hits such as “Ms. Dynamite,” “while out” and “Never Soft,” fellow Chase & Status collaborator Liam Bailey was up next and crooned and groaned to the sweet accompanying strums of a double bass and cello, which mellowed the vibe and set the mood for an extremely soulful night. Koko was more than warmed up and ready to welcome the star of the night on to the stage.
In a sleeveless, shiny metallic floor sweeping gown accompanied simply by trendy flatform shoes, Delilah gracefully appeared on stage, slightly bashful and seemingly nervous. After a quick greeting, the nerves seemed to melt away instantly as the house lights went down and the sultry tone and power of Delilah’s voice rang through the entire venue as she opened with “So Irate,” followed by “Only You” and the sexual “I Can Feel U.”
Her voice sounded impeccable. Each song was chimed with such delicacy and passion but still remained so powerful and encapsulating. The touching “21” hit home with a gust of force as did “Insecure,” right before Delilah raised the melancholic mood and performed her interpretation of singer/songwriter Sia’s old school garage anthem “Little Man.” The crowd sang along in unison two stepping and waving from left to right.
Just as it was thought the show could not get any better, Delilah soon took to the keyboard to whisk onlookers on a journey through “Cinababy,” “Time” and “Come Home.” The acoustic offering was a sure reminder of the strength and integrity of her voice, as she drifted deeper and deeper into her zone. After a sip of water and a few more songs, it felt like no time had passed at all as Delilah proceeded to close the show with “Breathe” and finally “Go.”
Exuding pure, honest emotion, without question it is obvious there is so much more to come from the young, talented songstress. One to watch for 2012 and beyond, it should be nothing but a big year for a big talent with confidence, passion and a message.
