You've probably heard of Sam Smith by now. This 21-year-old British singer's name has been on everyone's lips of late: the no-brainer of new music; President-elect for pop superstardom in 2014.  You might've heard his star-making turns on Naughty Boy's "La La La" and Disclosure's "Latch" - the former remains one of the biggest selling singles of the last year whilst the latter is perhaps the best 'dance' song of the last ten. He can count Maxwell as one of his biggest fans, after the soul music titan spent the entire summer gushing about the Brit to his millions of fans online, and he's sold out shows in New York and LA; all without an album or even a proper single release to his name.

Returning to the frontline and ready to offer up some of her signature sound, Alicia Keys puts out her RCA Records debut Girl On Fire. Her fifth studio album overall, it’s the first time she’s released any new material since 2009’s Element of Freedom. With her marriage to producer Swizz Beatz and the birth of their first son, Egypt, part reason for the delay, there’s also been a shift in record labels, some sneaker designing, and a bit of charity work thrown in to the mix for good measure. Refocusing her energies on the music, her most recent ongoing promotional campaign has seen her very much stroll back in to the limelight, and to a good reception.

Mustafa, better known as MeLo-X, hails from Brooklyn, New York “by way of Jamaica.” An emcee, DJ, music producer and laptop musician, all we know of him so far is what he’s chosen to share with us through his music; mixtapes the likes of More Merch and Mustafa The GodKing: Rise of the Merch Album (his two most recent releases) as well as a multitude of remixes. Although growing up listening to a lot of Hip Hop, the likes of Nas, Biggie Smalls and Tupac, his taste became more eclectic with the rise of MTV - “I started listening to Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Oasis...”; evident in his music today. There was no particular moment through which his love for music grew; it was more the fact that he grew up surrounded by it.

maxwel2lWhen I first saw the crowd that had come to watch Maxwell at the Hammersmith Apollo last Saturday, I should have known I’ll be in for a night to remember. It was one of the most beautifully diverse gathering of people I’ve ever seen at a gig; all ethnicities and ages represented here from your middle-aged bank manager types to your youngsters who looked like they’d be more comfortable bopping along to pop-R&B in the club than at a soul concert.
