Fela! The Musical In Talks For Nigerian Run

Fela! The Musical, the play which chronicles iconic Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti may be headed to Nigeria.

The show is currently running in London’s National Theatre and just finished a 14 month run on Broadway in New York. Now the show’s lead producer, Stephen Hendel, is in discussions with producers in Lagos, Nigeria, to present the show in late winter or early spring 2012.

Talking to the New York Times, Hendel recalled in an interview that he promised members of Fela Kuti’s family that he would bring the show to Nigeria’s capital, Lagos, one day.

“We’re in the process of trying to make arrangements to do so,” Mr. Hendel said. “No Broadway show has ever been to Nigeria in this fashion. It’s premature to announce anything, but it’s our hope to bring the show there soon.”

Hendel also has plans for an international tour of the show. He hopes to bring the show “to some places in the world where no Broadway musical has ever been.”
