It’s been evident that good music usually crops up around that late summer/early autumn season. This makes it the ideal period for Kanye West’s protégé Big Sean to be the first out of the block with his third mixtape installment of Finally Famous hosted by DJ Don Cannon. Detroit’s XXL Freshman grad has put in blazing appearances on his own and various other mixtapes (including Kanye’s Good A.S.S Mixtape) and has the potential to become the next marquee signing of Mr West’s G.O.O.D Music label. It’s now a question of whether he has enough class to keep the momentum high for a label riding high on qualitative releases.

Never one to shy away from controversy,  West Coast supremo Game has a had a career with many talking points. Whether the onslaughts with former employers G-Unit or his recent stabs at Jay-Z, amidst all of this was his knack to put out hardened gangsta rap which appealed to a wider spectrum than his Khaki wearing brethrens. In anticipation of The Red Album (the next album of his) Game, alongside DJ Skee, drops The Red Room: a glorification of all things "red" with some top draw collaborations on hand to help.

Since covering the XXL Freshmen '10, I feel I've grown closer to each of the protagonists selected, this being due to the amount of research I had to put into finding out abut them. As a consequence, I now find myself being drawn to any release from them due to the amount of time spent listening to their material. Wiz Khalifa is the first of the ten to produce something new for me to dissect. Taking the independent route after a brief spell with Warner, Khalifa has done enough to generate a buzz, with singles "Say Yeah" and "This Plane" being notable accomplishments.  Kush & Orange Juice ultimately throws Khalifa into the mix of names which many expect to provide something solid for the year - and possibly set any standard for the rest of his Freshman affiliates to catch up to.

When it comes to producing a solid mixtape, Sway knows a thing or two about this specific field. Entering the game with two smashing compilations (This Is My Promo volumes 1 and 2) and recently having his second entry hailed as Mixtape of the Decade at the Official Mixtape Awards, each Sway mixtape should be held in high estimation due to the quality of his portfolio. In anticipation of his Signature part 2 album, the DCypha squadron gets back into the mixtape driving seat to provide more quick witted teasers to set the pace for his forthcoming release.
