Paul McCartney, Shingai Shoniwa, Marques Toliver jam backstage at Africa Express | SoulCulture TV

Hours after being awarded the French Legion of Honour in Paris by French President Francois Hollande, Sir Paul McCartney made a surprise appearance at the closing Africa Express event in London last night, Sept. 8, to share the stage with an already stellar line-up.

Lead by Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, the spirited concert held at Granary Square in King’s Cross played host to a wide range of African, homegrown and wider international talents – including Baaba Maal, Amadou & Mariam, Rokia Traore, Tony Allen, M3NSA, M1 of Dead Prez, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Terri Walker, Kano, Roses Gabor, Afrikan Boy and Bashy among many – who came together for a lively evening of engrossing, sincere and free-spirited collaboration.

But even backstage special moments were made, as we quietly stumbled across the Beatles legend getting into an impromptu jam session with the Noisettes’ Shingai Shoniwa and emerging US violinist/singer/producer Marques Toliver – watch below.
