Zara McFarlane – “Open Heart” (Swindle Remix)

Every so often, I like to log into my brain a list of songs where the cover and/or remix transcends or is as strong as the original. Piquing interest today is Swindle‘s remix of “Open Heart” by East London’s own Zara McFarlane; the second single from the contemporary Jazz singer’s sophomore project If You Knew Her, which has been released on Gilles Petersons label Brownswood Recordings.

McFarlane’s album contains strong vocals over the traditional sounds of contemporary Jazz as well as more stripped down pieces. While the original of “Open Heart” contains no more than the light raindrop characteristics of a vibraphone, the light brush of the snare drum and a brooding three chords of the cello, South London producer Swindle does an amazing job of transforming this piece into a spaced out Soul/Jazz number with a spiky personality of its own, utilising the blast of four chords, an array of sound effects and a layer of flute for good measure.

With the single release set for April 28th, check out Swindle’s “Open Heart” remix below.
