Recap: BBC Radio 1Xtra celebrates 10 Years of Grime

Ten years on the scene and still going strong, UK Grime music has evolved into something that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. Having seen some of the genre’s main names step out into the wider music world and take their success to new heights, BBC Radio 1Xtra dedicated an entire week to celebrate Grime’s 10th birthday. Read on for the roundup and links to listen back.

Taking a look back at some of the best mixtapes to come from the scene, the unforgettable stories and the current state of the movement, the digital radio station took listeners deep into their Grime catalogue and played some classic live performances from veterans such as Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Ghetts.

DJ Target started things off last week with two hours dedicated solely to old school Grime music. Interviewing some of the pioneers of the scene from both the past and present time, Target followed up his show with his 10 Years of Grime documentary, featuring words from SBTV founder Jamal Edwards and emcee Lady Leshurr among others.

Moving from the beginning of the genre to the present day, DJ Cameo was joined by artists hailed The Future Of Grime, including Kozzie, Scruffizer, Merky Ace and C4, to bring listeners some fresh freestyles. Reminding us of the talent that has already landed this year, Cameo also played back some of show’s previous freestyles from the likes of Lady Leshurr, Ratlin, Rival, A Dot, Ice Kid, Krept & Konan and RoXXXan.
