Phlo Finister : Get Familiar

Her quirky fashion sense coupled with her unique mash up of nostalgic ’90s R&B, pop and Hip Hop makes 19 year old Phlo Finister‘s sound something fresh for the masses.

Oakland born, LA based Phlo has a strong background in fashion having modelled for Brian Lichtenberg, American Apparel, Maxine Dillion, Rojas and styling shoots for Electrik Red, Ibn Jasper, Rich Hill and Melyssa Ford so calling on her influence from the youthquaker movement sparked by ’60s style icons Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy, her mod style and penchant for ’90s Hip Hop and R&B culture makes her style an eclectic mix of popular culture.

Phlo Finister- Crown Gold EP:

Crown Gold – her six debut track EP is a fusion of hard hitting hip hop beats with her sweet R&B but at times haunting vocal featuring samples from Nancy Sinatra‘s refix of Cher’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” mashed up with Mobb Deep‘s infamous beat for “Shook Ones Pt. 2” and the Dr. Dre backdrop for “Xxplosive” as well as Doors’ “Riders on the Storm.”

Illustrating her already strong sense of self and blatant passion for visuals, Phlo shot the black and white visual for “BANG BANG” in London, the birthplace of her mod attire and sultry make up.

Phlo Finister – “BANG BANG”:

From her only body of work released so far, one of the standout tracks is “Shades” which sees her channel her inner Aaliyah influence, Timbo production impersonation and all combined with visuals heavily styled to emulate the stars iconic image; a video that has split opinions as either a homage or insult to the late great singer.

Phlo Finister – “Shades”:

With an already solid body of work having carved out a lane for herself, all by herself Phlo’s introductory offering makes her one to watch, having already generated a serious buzz and gotten salutes from LA Times Music Blog as one of their best of 2011 and various underground black music blogs.

Her debut full length studio album, to be called Youthquaker, is expected to drop in the middle of 2012 and I, for one, look forward to hearing and seeing more from this exciting addition to the music world.
