FKA twigs: Get Familiar

FKA twigs

A relatively hidden gem, UK songstress FKA twigs (formerly Twigs) is an immense and exciting talent who mysteriously emerged offering a unique take on the current trends of ethereal alternative R&B, with echoes, ticks and whispers that distinctly punctuate her music.

The singer, real name Tahliah Barnett, released an EP last year however it was hard for the casual fan to stumble across due to her lack of social network activity at the time; then having only a Tumblr and intriguing videos for her singles “Hide” and “Ache.” While her obscurity draws curiosity, the attention she’s now getting can also be credited to her masterfully composed, spacey pop tunes that lure you into trances of abstract thought set to floating vocals.

The elegant, relaxing and fragile disposition of twigs’ music is in tune with all other art forms she has an interest in – from fashion to ballet – and also reflects her rural Gloucestershire background, where she experienced the quiet and easy-going surroundings of the countryside before moving to London.

Her style, artwork and visuals are all abstract, unique and well thought out and seem to be an important aspect of FKA twigs as an artist, who teamed up with rising and highly creative video director Jesse Kanda for eye-popping visuals such as “Water Me,” co-produced by herself and Arca [who recently worked on Kanye West‘s Yeezus album].

This month twigs released her second EP through London label Young Turks, who also have a habit of introducing artists who have re-defined pop and soul music in their own special ways; such as such as The xx, SBTRKT and Sampha. Named after the way her bones pop and crack, it seems likely FKA twigs will make her break as star very soon.

Featuring four tracks including “Water Me” and “Papi Pacify,” her latest project, EP2, is out now.
