Das Racist is done and dusted | Music News

It appears that New York alt-rap trio Das Racist are no more. According to announcements made via Twitter and live in Munich, the group of rap nerds, who first emerged in 2008 with their blog hit “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell”, have split up. And it’s no joke.

Group members Heems and Kool A.D. have both released two solo mixtapes each this year, and the new emphasis on working alone reflects a break-up that’s been in effect for the last two months. Heems, aka Himanshu Suri, made the closest thing we’ll get to an official announcement last night (December 2nd) at the On3 Festival in Munich, when he told the crowd, “Das Racist is breaking up and we’re not a band anymore”. The trio were supposed to appear at the festival together, but it ended up being a Heems solo set.

Later on, Victor Vasquez, aka Heems’ rapping partner Kool A.D., tweeted:

Meanwhile, the group’s hype-man and occasional rapper Ashok Kondabolu, aka Dapwell, told SPIN that the group had planned to break up since May, commenting “we had just signed this record deal and we were going to put out one proper album and then go on a farewell tour, release a proper breaking up statement that could have been really funny, maybe a weird, stupid video. Now, all of that has gone to shit.”
