North Carolina Hip-Hop representer 9th Wonder releases a special beat tape with an thoughtful backstory, entitled Bladey Mae; named after his grandmother on his father’s side, Beulah Mae Jarret Douthit, whose nickname comes from blades kept in her purse as a form of protection in Jim Crow era South. Like those precious blades each of the tape’s 73 instrumentals, dedicated to the grandmother he never got to know, cut deep.
