Celebrity Digital Death for World AIDS Day (Video)

Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Janelle Monae, Usher, Justin Timberlake
and heaps of other celebrities have declared themselves digitally dead. The stars have stopped tweeting and updating on facebook for this year’s World AIDS Day campaign. Fans will have to raise $1million USD for children living with AIDS in India and Africa to see their favourite stars back on twitter.

Watch Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Janelle Monae and Usher give their final tweet and testament below:

This is a powerful campaign, but while it’s important to raise money for parts of the world where the society is financially inept to deal with proper medicine for AIDS sufferers, I do wish that more major, media-endorsed campaigns on AIDS and HIV were focused on raising awareness about the disease amongst people in the western world. World AIDS Day always highlights how much ignorance there still is about HIV and AIDS amongst the so-called “first world” regions like the UK and US; many people believe AIDS is a disease which just affects impoverished parts of the world or particular communities, and there is still a huge amount of stigmatisation and discrimination towards AIDS/HIV carriers.
