Terri Walker Talks New Album, Ski Beatz, Damon Dash & Gives Us The DD172 Tour | SoulCulture TV

We recently reported on UK soulstress Terri Walker‘s new distribution deal with Damon Dash‘s resurrected Rocafella Records, for her forthcoming Ski Beatz produced album:

Having made her name in 2003 with a soulful, well-crafted and critically acclaimed Untitled debut album (lead singles: “Guess You Didn’t Love Me” ft. Mos Def, “Ching Ching (Loving You Still)”, “Drawing Board”), followed by L.O.V.E (2005) and I Am (2006), UK Soul singer Terri Walker’s name and voice have been largely absent from the mainstream for several years.

She resurfaced on the radar last month when the Hip Hop blogs got hold of “Aerials” from Ski Beatz’ (Jay Z, Camp Lo) forthcoming 24 Hour Karate School album, featuring Terri alongside Curren$y, Stalley, Whosane and Mos Def.

With a new album in the works, Terri Walker gives SoulCulture the exclusive first scoop on her 2010 comeback. The versatile vocalist reveals that she has begun recording her fourth studio album with Ski Beatz on production duties, which will be distributed through Damon Dash’s newly resurrected Roc-A-Fella label…

Now let Terri give you the latest – in her own words – on her new album, working with Ski Beatz and Damon Dash. Complete with a guided tour around Dash’s much talked about DD172 gallery/studios/editing suite/creative hub in New York…

On recording at DD172:
“It’s like a family; I feel like I’m at home here… People respect each others’ space and respect each others’ artistry – which is amazing to me because you know it doesn’t happen very often. Nowadays people just jump on records because someone’s big. Here, people like it because they like it, not because someone else told them to like it.”

On working with Damon Dash:
“He, to me, is amazing because he’s really trying to make people win that haven’t really had the chance to get out there and haven’t had all the exposure. The real talent… not trying to do what everyone else is doing. Obviously he started Roc-A-Fella before with Jay-Z and everybody else… He made it before – but this time he wants to make it with people that don’t have the same opportunities as everybody else; and that’s why I have a lot of love and respect for him.”

Produced by Ski Beatz [pictured], Ms Walker’s new album has a prevalent Hip Hop theme and will feature the likes of Rugz D Bewler and Smoke DZA – with plans to also collaborate with Curren$y and several UK emcees including TY and Wretch-32.
