Sade Live @The_O2, London (May 31, 2011) | Gig Review

Tuesday 31 May marked the long awaited return to the London stage of the legendary Helen Folasade Adu and band, better known as Sade. Ms Adu is a veritable prodigal daughter in touring terms anyway, having last played these shores in 1993. Although she claims to enjoy performing, her nearly-20 year absence from the UK live scene indicates otherwise.

Arriving at the O2 this late spring evening, I am pleasantly surprised to see such a cross section of ages and backgrounds making up the Sade faithful; not unlike the sort of crowd that attended her musical male equivalent, Maxwell’s comeback gig in 2009. The band has been well noted for their ability to draw a diverse audience, one that mirrors the multicultural line-up of Sade itself. Yet I’m not entirely sure what to expect on the night.

Sade’s relationship with the UK- both media and listening audience-has been a complicated one. Following their initial breakthrough in the early-mid ‘80s Britain’s reaction to Sade appeared to gradually cool. With the exception of ‘By Your Side’ (peak chart position number 17) none of the singles from the bands last two albums have troubled the UK Top 40. And they were generally always underrated by a clueless rock-focused British music press.

Sade Ultimate Collection set for May release, featuring Jay-Z on "Moon & The Sky" remix

Following up on the captivating - and Grammy Award winning - success of their Soldier Of Love LP released in 2010, Sade are to release a double CD compilation titled The Ultimate Collection on May 2nd, featuring a selection of classic Sade songs spanning their career to date - plus three new, unheard goodies, including a version of "Moon & The Sky" featuring Jay-Z.

Exciting news for fans of both the band and rapper, given gorgeous frontwoman Helen Folasade Adu's admission last year to the LA Times that she has turned down requests to collaborate with the leading rapper, previously stating "I'm too scared... They'll find me out. It's like 'The Wizard of Oz.' They'll find out there's nothing there. As for collaborations, I'm collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write." Read more

VIDEO: Sade - "Babyfather" (Snippet)

I'm guilty of beginning all my Sade blogs with a statement about the general gorgeousness of whatever it is they're doing.

Once again, it's my instant reaction to the intense colourfest of the 'Babyfather' artwork and music video. Released tonight exclusively on iTunes for 48hours, with deliciously bold colour clashes and beautiful imagery the 'Babyfather' video is literal candy for kids. [Plus that other kind - she, of course, looks stunning.]

So, I'm afraid, to watch the full video right now you'll have to buy it exclusively on iTunes...
But hey - what's £1.29 among fans?

WATCH THE FULL VIDEO HERE!

Alternatively, wait 48 hours - but in the meantime, here's a 38-second snippet to whet your appetite...

Did it have you reaching for your credit card?

Rare Sade Interview : Times Online

Sade - SOL

One of music's most elusive stars recently agreed to do an interview with the Times. I always feel a bit guilty reading a Sade interview since she seems so reluctant to give them. Nevertheless Robert Sandall's piece is probably the most insightful and deferential one-to-one feature on the first lady of UK soul I'm yet to read. For once, a feature on Sade by the British press that is not completely blighted by lazy journalism. There's a lot to be learned from Ms Adu on the responsibility that success and wealth bring as this snippet suggests...

'...Frugality... is her style, but she’s generous with it... Her touring musicians comment on how fair she has been in awarding valuable songwriting credits for their contributions — a rare thing in the tightfisted world of pop accountancy.

She has done this on the strict understanding that none of the beneficiaries talk about it, “or ever write anything about me”, which they haven’t. It’s not just a personal-privacy thing, or control freakery, she claims, “I just don’t like the power relationship it implies”. She isn’t shy about the money per se. “I always wanted to have money...But the great thing is when you’ve got it, your life doesn’t revolve around money any more.” ...'

There are very few acts that can disappear for a whole decade before releasing a new album and still have legions of adherents keep the fire burning.  Sade, with the inscrutable quality that allows them to take these artistic liberties, is one such band. Read more
