Last night Marsha Ambrosius headlined an intimate show at North London venue Dingwalls and exclusively shared her stunning cover version of late great soul legend Teena Marie's 'Yes Indeed', from Lady T's final Motown album It Must Be Magic (1981).

"Yes Indeed" was cited as a personal favorite by Teena Marie, who gave Ms Ambrosius her personal seal of approval on the cover.

"She used to do 'Say Yes' in her set, and that's how we got talking..." Ambrosius revealed, playing her version of the song to the crowd through a laptop. "Back when I thought I was recording a solo album I was like, 'I love 'Portuguese Love' and I love 'Yes Indeed' and I would love to cover it,' and she gave me the 'Okay girl!'"

"Then she heard it and she gave me approval. That means a lot to me; for a singer to respect you is like a whole other thing... To have the respect of someone like that is like, I'm doing the right thing with my life..."

Black Girls Rock! Awards & Perfomances | TV Catch-Up

For the first time ever, BET broadcast the 5th Annual Black Girls Rock Awards, an event created by non-profit organization Black Girls Rock! to celebrate the brilliance and achievements of inspirational Black women in the entertainment world and wider community.

Aired on Sunday night, the event was hosted by actress Nia Long, awarded inspirational women including iconic actress Ruby Dee and Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant, who received a standing ovation. The show featured performances by Kelly Price, Marsha Ambrosius, Ledisi, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Shontelle, VV Brown, Monica and Jill Scott, who opened the show with a performance of "Golden". For me, the stand out performance was Kelly Price, Jill Scott, Ledisi & Marsha Ambrosius' performance of Nina Simone's "Four Women" (below).

THE AWARDS:
Young, Gifted and Black award: Raven-Symoné (presented by Malinda Williams)
Motivator award: Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant (presented by Estelle)
Living Legend award: Ruby Dee (presented by Lynn Whitfield)
Visionary award: Missy Elliot (Presented by Ciara)
“Who’s Got Next” Award: Keke Palmer (Presented by Raven Symoné)

I won't wax lyrical about how inspiring and necessary it is for positive events like this to take place AND be televised, especially to an American audience where there still is a lot of work to be done  to reinforce positive images of women of colour. Nor will I stress too much that it's about time BET pulled their finger out and produced some content most audiences can be proud to watch. Instead, I'll tell you to press play on the performances below, and check out the full show over at BET.com.
