Katy B - On A Mission | Album Review

Despite being hailed by the mainstream press as the “princess of Dubstep” when she first entered the charts nearly a year ago, Kathleen “Katy B” Brien’s subsequent rise to prominence suggests an artist inclined towards longevity far greater than the average fresh-faced dance music vocalist. A BRIT School graduate with a Popular Music degree from Goldsmiths, the singer-songwriter featured on DJ NG’s “Tell Me”, an underground Funky House smash, back in 2008 and was part of vibrant Brixton-based Hip Hop band The Illersapiens.

Her debut single, “Katy On A Mission,” released independently by label Rinse, took radio and clubs by storm and hit #5 in the UK charts, gaining the nation’s attention in the process. She followed this outstanding achievement by signing a major label deal with Colombia, releasing two more solo singles, both vastly different from her debut, and featuring on Magnetic Man’s Top 20 hit “Perfect Stranger.” Her consistent excellence and constant presence in the charts meant that Brien’s debut album, On A Mission, was one of the most hotly anticipated of 2011.

Katy B performs at Sony showcase in Paris (Video)

Rinse FM songstress Katy B performed in Paris last night as part of a showcase organised by her record label Sony. What's so nice about Katy is that she's commercially successful, makes genuinely great songs and can actually sing - in 2011, artists like her are as rare as a Lauryn Hill comeback that doesn't end in pregnancy.

Katy's debut album On A Mission is one of the best releases of the year so far and, having had the pleasure of seeing perform her recently, I can confirm that  her live show more than matches up. Her band are one of the tightest around and the way that they interpret her club-friendly electronic sound (*spoiler alert* her touring band includes a brass section!) is amazing. Check out her Paris performance below.

Ms Dynamite - "Neva Soft" | New Music

Ms Dynamite follows up her return to the Top 40 last year as a featured artist alongside DJ Zinc on "Wile Out" and Katy B on top five hit "Lights On", with this Labrinth-produced banger. "Neva Soft" is Dynamite's first release as a solo artist since 2006, and serves as a shop window for both the singing that made her famous and the revered MC'ing that we all loved in the first place.

She's mounting a fully-fledged comeback at a time when the UK's wealth of young and energetic female emcees are genuinely giving the men a run for their money, perhaps for the first time ever. All of the young women making noise today owe a debt to Dynamite and the trail she blazed nearly 10 years ago - it'll be interesting to see how she fares competing with the hunger and lyrical dexterity of artists like Lady Leshurr, Mz Bratt and No Lay.

Magnetic Man ft Katy B - "Perfect Stranger" | Official Video

I'm pretty much loving everything Katy B lends her vocal to. Producer/DJs Skream, Benga and Artwork (Magnetic Man) are on the buttons for the mellow dubstep beat on "Perfect Stranger". The single is accompanied by dope visuals which tell the story of rebellion from the system on a hot day.
