Gil Scott-Heron -"New York Is Killing Me" (Directed by Chris Cunningham) | Music Video

Chris Cunningham the director who created the incredible (but so scary it scarred my young mind) visuals for Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" unveiled his vision for Gil Scott-Heron's "New York Is Killing Me" at the Museum of Modern Art earlier this week.

This is the acclaimed director's first new video in four years and Cunningham is also presently working on his first audiovisual album.

Album Review: Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here

February 2010 revealed a jewel in the crown of super-sonic XL Recordings – whose coat of arms reads: Radiohead, the White Stripes, Basement Jaxx, Vampire Weekend, Ratatat, to name but a few - with the musician, poet, novelist, activist, the extraordinaire and un-classifiable Gil Scott-Heron. Music messenger Richard Russell, XL's founder, sealed the production of Gil Scott-Heron's first album in 16 years: I'm New Here, a 28 minute LP of 15 tracks. 60 years-old in body, ageless in Soul and perhaps even soul. The poet has returned, bearing an aura on a par with that of the most ancient and potent, wise and mischievous gods. But had he ever left? Read more

Originals: The Story of Gil Scott-Heron – Documentary (Watch here)

An interesting documentary I just stumbled across: Originally aired on the BBC in 2004, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised: A Film About Gil Scott-Heron features contributions from disciples such as Chuck D and Mos Def as well as music from his career stretching back over 20 albums to the early '70s.

Gil Scott-Heron is the Godfather of rap. His confrontational, no-nonsense street poetry and intelligent song writing skills have inspired the modern Hip-Hop generation and he is arguably one of the most significant musicians and poets in Afro-American history.

I found the documentary online in 6 parts... Read more

2010 really does feel like it's destined to be a fulfilling year for music.

Dark and delicious.

Kanye back in the studio to 'follow in the footsteps of Maya Angelou, Gil Scott-Heron and Nina Simone'

kanye-west
Kanye West revealed on his blog on Monday that he is "so happy to be back in the studio making new music".  Using Maya Angelou, Gil Scott-Heron and Nina Simone as examples the producer/rapper observes, "It's funny how so many rappers get worse as their careers stretch out but true poets get better".

Kanye's full blog entry:

FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY FOR THEIR CONSTANT LOVE AND SUPPORT OVER THESE PAST 6 YEARS! I'M SO HAPPY TO BE BACK IN THE STUDIO MAKING NEW MUSIC. I WILL BRING YOU THE BEST I HAVE TO OFFER WITH THE SAME DEDICATION THAT KOBE HAS ON THE COURT. IT'S FUNNY HOW SO MANY RAPPERS GET WORSE AS THEIR CAREERS STRETCH OUT BUT TRUE POETS GET BETTER. WE WILL FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MAYA ANGELOU, GILL SCOTT HERRON AND NINA SIMONE. THEIR WORK IMPROVED WITH TIME. THEY DOCUMENTED WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN CULTURE. THAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE MODERN DAY ARTISTS AND POETS, TO ACCURATELY REPRESENT WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW, SO WHEN THE POWERS THAT BE TRY TO REWRITE HISTORY YOU CAN ALWAYS LOOK AT OUR WORKS AND FIND TRUTH AND SINCERITY IN A WORLD OF PROCESSED INFORMATION. LET US SOAK IN POSITIVE FORCES AND LOOK DOWN ON UPON THOSE WHO MASQUERADE AS TRUTH TELLERS AND OBJECTIVE FACT GIVERS WHEN IN REALITY EVERYTHING THAT IS PROJECTED HAS AN AGENDA OF BRAINWASHING US, THE "CONSUMER", THE PUBLIC, TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY WANT US TO. LET US LOOK PAST HEADLINES AND DEAL WITH JUST A BIT OF REALITY IN THIS NEW DECADE. WE HAVE OUR OWN OUTLETS NOW. WE DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE EVERYTHING ANYMORE. NOW I'LL FIGURE OUT A WAY TO MAKE THAT RYHME LOL!!

COMPETITION: GIL SCOTT HERON @ SOBS, NY - June 10th.

gillscott_juneSOB's Concert PRESENT:
A summer Night with
GIL SCOTT HERON

10th June 2009

Doors:  6:30 PM / 9:30pm
Show:   8PM & 10pm
Admission:      $22 in adv/$25 day of show

The incomparable & resilient Gil Scott-Heron comes to SOBs for a Summer Night of poetry and music. The poet, musician, author & revolutionary is a revered living legend most famous for the 1970’s era-defining poem, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”.

Gil Scott-Heron’s politically charged material made him a stalwart figure in the 1970’s civil rights movement. His lyrical content covered topics like the superficiality of television and mass consumerism, the hypocrisy of some would-be Black revolutionaries, white middle-class ignorance of the difficulties faced by inner-city residents, and fear of homosexuals. His honesty, matter-of-fact delivery and fearlessness to address important social issues in the face of media criticism made him one of the foremost progenitors of contemporary hip-hop and spoken word. In fact, Heron is often referred to as 'The Godfather of Rap'.

After more than 30 years of social activism through music, Gil Scott-Heron remains dedicated to the civil rights movement and social equality. After a too-long hiatus the resilient Scott-Heron will take to the stage where seems to be most comfortable. June 10th promises to be an epic performance.
