Interview: Naughty Boy on avoiding the industry, Emeli Sandé's rise & Hotel Cabana

The majority of us were introduced to Naughty Boy's sounds a few years before we ever caught a glimpse of him. Having taught himself to make music from the shed in his parents’ garden on a Watford estate, the British producer and songwriter, real name Shahid Khan, began furnishing homegrown rappers with beats - Bashy, Devlin and Tinie Tempah among them - before connecting with a then little-known Scottish singer, Emeli Sandé.

Their chance meeting led to an engaging musical partnership that resulted in him producing and co-writing all tracks, bar five, on her multi-platinum selling debut Our Version Of Events, which became the UK’s best-selling album of 2012. 18 months on and Naughty Boy’s own album, Hotel Cabana, debuted at number two this summer, tugging Khan to the forefront.

On a mission to delve into the character of the man behind the hits, SoulCulture sat down with Naughty Boy over a tasty curry in Covent Garden to discuss developing his craft, learning from Emeli Sandé, avoiding the industry, growth of the UK music scene and adjusting to prominence. Read more

Billboard Music Awards 2013: Winners and Live Performances | TV Catch-Up

billboard music awards 2013 winners and performances
Last night the 2013 BillBoard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and was packed with several performance highlights.

Chris Brown gave a performance of his current single "Fine China," with a rendition riddled with bum notes but high in energy and action; including a dubious fight-dance break.

Nicki Minaj left her pop persona locked up and came out in sassy rap mode to perform "High School," complete with a ripped, studded figure-hugging outfit, before playing hypeman to Lil Wayne's guest verse, dropping and shaking it with a lapdance for him to round things off [Weezy: "I'm the luckiest guy in the world - all that ass!"].

Making leaps and bounds above lapdances on the controversy scale was Miguel's [otherwise] stellar performance of "Adorn," during which an ambitious stage dive lead to him drop-kicking and landing on some women in the audience.

Musical highlights include Bruno Mars' performance of "Treasure,' Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' performance of "Thrift Shop" and UK talent Ed Sheeran's rendition of "Lego House." A host of additional stars performed on the night, including David Guetta, Akon & Ne-Yo, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopes and Taylor Swift.

Mike Posner remixes Ed Sheeran's "The A-Team" | New Music

While working steadily on completing his new album, Mike Posner gives back to his fans to tide them over for a while by releasing a free remix of Ed Sheeran's first hit single "The A-Team."

Building on the original, more sombre beat, Mike Posner enlists guitar player Jayson DeZuzio to help build it up making it slightly more uptempo, as well as adding a steady drum pattern throughout.

Not only does the beat get updated, but Posner also pens a couple of new verses to go along with the original chorus where he tells his own tales of friends being taking away from him due to drugs.

Ed Sheeran performs on Jimmy Kimmel Live | TV Catch-Up

Ed Sheeran has been able to build a massive UK following in part thanks to stunning acoustic sets, and recently he visited the States to grace Jimmy Kimmel Live with performances of "The A Team" and "You Need Me, I Don't Need You", his two lead singles from debut album +, armed only with a guitar and his flawless voice.

"The A Team", which recently helped Ed into the US Billboard Chart for the first time and earned him a Grammy nomination for 'Song of the Year', plays just as well live as it does on the radio, and here it leaves the American audience under the British singer-songwriter's spell, with the help of some moving new intonations.

On the other hand, the extended version of "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" sees them wowed by Ed's sheer musical talent, as he ups the pace to keep up with his own incredible guitar riffing. The acoustic handiwork from 6.35 to around the 8 minute mark, when he loses the guitar and delivers some energetic double-time rapped vocals, is breathtaking. Plus he gets the crowd going like no-one I've seen on Jimmy Kimmel before.
