Jay Z & Ron Howard's "Made In America" Documentary | TV Catch-Up

jay-z-ron-howard

Jay Z takes us behind the scenes of his multi-genre extravaganza, the "Made In America" festival held in Philadelphia last year. The event was carefully pieced together by Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard and this 90-minute documentary showcases everything from the announcement of the show, rehearsals, performance footage and interviews with various artists who took part in the the two-day event.

A concert documentary wouldn't be complete without, of course, some crisp stage performances and this film contains that in abundance. Featured artists include the likes of Run-DMC, D'Angelo, Odd Future, Pearl Jam, Jill Scott, Skrillex, Janelle Monáe and Rita Ora amongst others.

Throughout the documentary we certainly get an understanding of the concept and thinking behind putting on such a spectacle, and just what the title "Made In America" means to everybody involved.

Wale - "No Pain No Gain" | New Music

Wale

New music from Wale comes in the form of a motivational theme song of a sports documentary. Yes, it's no surprise that Wale is a huge sports fan, especially a huge fan of his hometown NFL team, the Washington Redskins. "No Pain No Gain" was written specifically for the Gatorade and NFL Films documentary about Robert Griffin III, the star quarterback of the Washington Redskins, titled RGIII: The Will to Win.

In an interview with HipHopWired, Wale discussed his creative thought process when it came to writing "No Pain No Gain." "I did my best to speak for him,” says Wale. “[RG3] ain’t no rapper, at least I don’t think so; he probably could if he wanted to. If I was telling a story to get inside of Robert’s mind, what would he say? That’s pretty much it.”

RGIII: The Will to Win airs August 27 on ESPN. Check out the trailer, featuring Wale's contribution, and stream the song, below.

50 Cent premieres 'Tapia' Documentary at L.A Film Festival | Film News

tapia-premiere-2
Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent extends his executive producer CV to his list of many talents as the Queens rapper premiered new documentary Tapia at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Wednesday (19th June). 50 teamed up with producer Lou DiBella on this project which centres around the life of legendary boxer Johnny Tapia.

The late boxer experienced a childhood full of turmoil, orphaned by the age of eight after his mother was brutally murdered and at the tender age of nine he turned to boxing for solace. Plagued by tragedy throughout his life Tapia still triumphed in the ring and his memory will remain as one of a sports legend whose life came to an end at the age of 45. Director Eddie Alcazar captures some of Johnny's last moments as he speaks on his addiction to drugs and the highs of success.

50 spoke to Variety on what drew him to the project stating “I was drawn to the intensity of this project. His story resonated with me because like Tapia, I too lost my mother to violence and grew up with limited means. It’s a heartfelt story and it was important for me to get involved with bringing this to a broader audience.”
