Ibn Inglor

Ibn Inglor: King of the Lost Children | Interview

Ibn Inglor doesn't live here in the present. There's a place in the distant future where sunlight has vanished leaving only neon lights, decaying buildings and apocalyptic soundscapes. This is where Ibn Inglor lives.

Over the past year the Chicago emcee has been able to paint this dynamic, ominous picture with two highly-acclaimed pieces in the form of GawdsSpeed and New Wave and as we enter 2014, Ibn's rise to relevance may not be that far away in the future as first thought. Interested in the unique persona Inglor has crafted and music that could quite easily feature as a soundtrack for a possible Spike Lee Sci-fi horror, Dave Reid set out to find out what the Chicago artist is all about. From Akira to obnoxious bloggers to a project that almost never happened, Ibn Inglor needs to be heard and the time is now. Read more

Vic Mensa - INNANETAPE [Mixtape] | Stream/Download

Vic Mensa has been an 'I've seen your face before' kind of guy through such appearances as Kids These Days and a friendly rivalry (and features) with Chance the Rapper, but over the past 6 months we've now been properly introduced to the Chicago up-and-comer.

The culmination of this fruitful encounter is Vic's highly anticipated INNANETAPE that he finally dropped today to a frenzied clamor of hands curious to know what Chicago's newest talent has to offer. And hopefully some indication as to what they're feeding those kids over there.

The project itself  features previous releases such as "YNSP" and "Time Is Money" while harboring acts like Ab-Soul, BJ The Chicago Kid, Chance the Rapper and Thundercat in a solid body of work displaying plenty of end product to justify the hype that’s been heaped upon him lately.

It's time to make your own mind up though and we're on hand to help as you can stream INNANETAPE in its entirety down below and if you're feeling especially kind to your iTunes library, here's the download link too.

Ibn Inglor - "Black Print" | New Music

Ibn Inglor Black Print

It doesn't take two seconds before the new artist on the block get comparisons fired at them. Then seemingly another 2 seconds pass and they're victim to their own comparisons to the even newer kids on the block. It’s all a vicious circle and Ibn Inglor doesn't appreciate it.

These are the thoughts echoed on Ibn's new track "Black Print", his last release before the heavily anticipated New Wave drops. Produced by Tom Tripp, "Black Print" issues a warning shot to anyone who dares to juxtapose his talents to anyone, especially his Chi-Town superior, Kanye West.

Unfortunately these comparisons are inevitable, especially when an artist of such talent as Ibn steps in, however it’s refreshing to see a new kid on the block as himself address the issue. Whilst most artists revel in such commendations until they implode - as many do - Ibn uses the oozing creativity of his to put a daunting, synth heavy spin on things.

Call him the new… Actually we better not.

This is Ibn Inglor.

Willis Earl Beal - "Black Beauty" | New Music

In response to a Lana Del Rey demo track that recently surfaced, Willis Earl Beal shares his rendition of the demo titled "Black Beauty."

While the Chicago singer reiterates the same lyrics as Lana, he sings in a more engaging manner as if he was responding to her woes in the original demo track. She isn't completely gone from the single as he uses pieces of her voice to accompany him in the chilling cover. Willis Earl Beal is raising the excitement for his upcoming sophomore album, Nobody Knows, out September 10. Pre-order here.

Listen to Beal's "Black Beauty" ballad below.

It’s been a month since the arrival of Acid Rap and like many of you out there, I'm finding it hard to take it off repeat.

Yasiin Bey performs "The Light Is Not Afraid Of The Dark" in Chicago (prod. Kanye West) [Video]

When you get to legendary status like Yasiin Bey has, your album songs aren't necessarily the only good material you have, as some of what you didn't even deem right to make the final cut on your LP could actually still be better than a lot of what's out there - and that's exactly what Chicago got to hear when the rapper formerly known as Mos Def performed "The Light Is Not Afraid Of The Dark." Tink: Get Familiar

Ladies and gentlemen (and everybody else that doesn't quite fit into those categories), meet 17 year old Trinity Home aka Tink and keep both eyes and ears locked on this young lady, because she is set to become the next big export from the same city that gave us Kanye West, Common, Lupe Fiasco and many more.

Coming from a different lane entirely to the recent Chief Keef, Lil Reese, GBE representations of the Windy City hip hop scene, The Calumet City, Chicago raised fast rising rapper and singer, who cites the likes of TLC, Alicia Keys and fellow Chi-town representative Da Brat amongst her influences, already has three mixtapes under snapback displaying the impressive ability to craft and execute emotive R&B songs and then effortlessly switch it up with scene-stealing, triptronic flow powered rap verses covering a variety of subjects.

A perfect example of her ability to balance both skills with outstanding results can be witnessed on her standout track "Background Music", a sensual narrative where she flips between singing and rapping without missing a beat over bedroom ready soundbed.

Watch: Tink - Background Music

I've already heard her being described as the 'Female Drake', which I can understand as Drizzy has carved out a successful and influential career utilizing both hip hop and R&B, but I think Tink has the potential to become a stronger force than that. With her undeniable charisma and a maturity way beyond her years, she manages to bounce from tracks about relationships and emotions, to spitting hard & hungry ready verses without ever coming across as contrived or unbelievable as evidenced on her "No Competition" freestyle.

Watch: Tink - No Competition

I urge you to go and download Tink's Winter's Diary (her mainly R&B debut mixtape), Alter Ego (the rap orientated follow up) and absorb her latest release Ballads & Blunts below, then go thank Tink... tell her SoulCulture sent you.
