Q-Tip explains beef with Michael Rapaport’s Beats, Rhymes & Life Documentary | [Video]

In an exclusive interview with MTV News which will be published in full later in the week, Q-Tip joined by group members Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi (who called in by phone) finally opens up about the Michael Rapaport-directed documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest that premièred at the Sundance Festival earlier in January, his and the group’s grievances towards the film and some of the “red flags” which led them to withdraw their support of the film.

According to Q-Tip, some of these “red flags” included the decision to keep information regarding the Sundance Festival from the group, the timing with which the film trailer was leaked unto the internet and the choice of title for the trailer – Beats, Rhymes & Fights. However, the stroke that broke the camel’s back so to speak was an email that Q-Tip received from one of the films producers by accident.

In the two minute excerpt below from the group’s interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway, Q-Tip reveals contents of the aforementioned email that was accidentally sent to him by one of the films producers on December 17, 2010, that read:

“First off let’s close the Billing Block and put it on the poster so they can’t get on that. Then we’ll f**k them on everything else.”

Watch below as Q-Tip describes to Sway Calloway, his initial reaction to reading the above email, what the producers’ response to their accidental email and why he could not trust Rapaport and his team after that.

Group member, Phife Dawg was not at the MTV News interview and was the only member of the group to attend the Sundance première of the documentary
