J. Dilla: Still Shining – Remembering James Yancey | Video


To mark what would have been the 37th birthday of one of the best and most influential Hip Hop producers of all time – James “J. Dilla” Yancey; Gifted Films in collaboration with The J. Dilla Project have released J. Dilla: Still Shining – a video project created especially for his fans to serve as an inspirational and uplifting reinforcement of a greater awareness of their love and support for the late great J. Dilla and his incredible legacy.

This Brian “B.Kyle” Atkins directed project which was created at the time of J. Dilla’s funeral service in 2006 is a moving dedication to the late great Hip Hop producer/artist for sharing his music and talents with the world and a focal point to the supporters of his legacy to be inspired by.

The beautifully-crafted 35-minute piece filled with unreleased video footage of the legend himself, photographs from his final European tour, footage from his funeral, fans-submitted artworks, interviews with some of his closest friends and colleagues and so much more, gives a more in-depth insight into the musical icon that is James “J. Dilla” Yancey and the legacy and immeasurable influence that he left behind.

Yancey passed away on February 10, 2006 (just three days after his 32nd birthday) from a rare and incurable blood disease called TTP and has left a significant imprint on Soul and Hip Hop music as well as modern Electronic and Alternative music, remaining a visible influence on the music of Hip Hop, Pop, Alternative, Soul and Indie artists and bands such as Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, The xx, Joy Orbison, Darkstar, Mystery Jets, Black Milk and Flying Lotus just to name a few.

From his work ethic, inspiration and influences to his approach and range as a producer to Dilla’s personal side and the other side of J. Dilla that many overlook (Jay The Emcee), this uplifting video lets his fans garner a greater understanding and appreciation of what J.Dilla is all about, with close associates and colleagues such as Karreim Riggins, Pete Rock, Houseshoes, Dwele, Erykah Badu, Common, Bilal, ?uestlove and Moni Love amongst others, all sharing their thoughts on Dilla and helping to add to the insight, understanding and appreciation that is evocative of the entire project.

“The Master”, “The Greatest Beatmaker of All Time”, Genius, Inventive, Perfection, Soulful, Aggresive, Creative, Tenacious, Amazing are only some of the words that are rightly used to describe J. Dilla and the music he created. With a discography stretching as far back as 1995 and continuing well into 2011 across the board of Hip Hop and Soul music, James “J. Dilla” Yancey can and will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace to J. DILLA.
