Will Smith working on comeback album, says producer Mars | Music News

Only yesterday I was reminiscing over Will Smith‘s 1997 album Big Willie Style – to the amusement, dismay and annoyance of my colleagues [in that order] – so it’s with a wry smile that I greet today’s news that the Grammy Award winning West Philadelhpia born and raised rapper, actor and film produced is to return to his roots and our eardrums, with new music on the way.

In a recent interview with XXL about his latest production work, La Mar “Mars” Edwards of the 1500 Or Nothin production group/musical collective reveals: “We’re working on Will Smith, bringing him back.”

Having worked on much of Game‘s new The R.E.D. Album and T.I.‘s next release, the busy producer also states he’s working on new music with Ashanti, a mixtape with Mario, and an album with Snoop Dogg‘s daughter.

With five collaborative albums with DJ Jazzy Jeff under his belt [earning the pair the first ever rap Grammy in 1989 for their single “Parents Just Don’t Understand”] and a further four solo albums – the last being 2005’s Lost and Found – when this new Will Smith material will materialise, we don’t yet know. Maybe his daughter Willow‘s success got him itching for the mic again.

I’m sure this news will be met with raised eyebrows and dismissal by many for his light-hearted, curse-free ghostwritten flow and comedic persona, but until we hear something I think it’s too early to judge. Afterall, [the ever-mocked] Diddy‘s LP with Dirty Money was a pleasantly solid surprise last year that many of us didn’t see coming; let’s not write Mr. Smith off just yet…

Stay tuned for further news.
