During a recent pit-stop in Milan, Italy for the opening of his Odd Future sweatshop, Tyler, The Creator sat down with local blog PTWSCHOOL to discuss his close friendship with Kanye West, his dislike for album reviews and how rap music does not inspire him.

The controversial rapper and producer has enjoyed a great deal of success this year with the release of his third studio album, WOLF, and shunned a guest verse from Kanye on one of the stand-out tracks on the record, “IFHY”. However, Tyler explains that the snub was not intended as a diss, but was simple a case of Yeezy not fitting in with the concept of the track.

“Kanye is one of the only few people in this industry that I consider a friend,” says Tyler. “I probably talk to him once a week. We both have a love for art and we hate a lot of the same stuff.

“So, I don’t want people to think that’s a diss or a side-hit when I said I denied him. It was just that, I played him the album before it was finished and it was song that he really really liked on there… he wanted to be on it or whatever. And that song, it was no way where creative-wise I thought he would fit on there. I love Kanye, I’m a big fan, but that just wasn’t right for him.”

Nevertheless, Tyler adds that a collaboration with Kanye could be possible in the future; “We’re most likely going to have things in the future to come, but I don’t want people to think that I’m going to swing any negative energy towards him when he wasn’t on the song. That’s my boy…”

During his interview, the Odd Future frontman also discusses how he hopes to inspire his fans to be themselves and not conform to society’s expectations, explaining that he doesn’t agree with the idea behind album reviews – something that lead to his low-key promotion for WOLF.

“I think reviews are kind of stupid,” he says. “You have people who are followers, so if a website like Pitchfork gives something a fucking low score, a person who can’t think for themselves will go based off that score and not listen to something that they might actually like… ”
