’90s R&B figurehead Toni Braxton is ending her musical hiatus with the release of a collaborative album, Love, Marriage And Divorce, on 3rd December with fellow genre-pioneer Babyface and as a taster of the relationship-themed record to come, one of the album cuts, “Hurt You”, has hit the net.
Opening with alternating heartfelt lines from Babyface and Braxton, the track slowly builds along piano chords until a snare-charged drum beat takes charge and transforms the ballad into an emotional R&B number. “Hurt You” is reminiscent of Braxton’s back-catalogue, which Babyface also featured on, focusing on the pain and tribulations of relationships through its lyrical content, stating “I never meant to hurt you/ I never meant to break your heart” in the chorus refrain. With the addition of Babyface’s smooth vocal delivery meshing perfectly with Braxton’s own forceful tone the collaboration also works sonically and thematically on more than just a superficial level.
