Thursday Throwback: Bobby Caldwell “Open Your Eyes” x “Do For Love”

This Thursday I throwback to some blue-eyed 80’s soul for your listening pleasure. According to Wikipedia, Bobby Caldwell retains the title of: “The white guy most often mistaken for an African American vocalist.” While he was most relevant on the pop music scene in the 80s, hip hop fans will recognise my chosen gems this week via Common and 2Pac who both sampled Mr Caldwell on hip hop love songs.

“Open Your Eyes” – Sampled by Common on “The Light”

“Let me show you the light!”

“What You Won’t Do For Love” – Sampled by 2Pac “Do For Love”

And in case that’s made you feel like listening to Common’s “The Light” and 2Pac’s “Do For Love”, jump under the cut for those.

Common featuring Dwele “The Light”

“I’ll never call you my bitch or even my boo
There’s so much in a name and so much more in you”

2Pac “Do For Love”

“I wanna take your misery, replace it with happiness
but I need your faith in me, I’m a sucka for love”
