The Roots – Undun | Album Cover

Like a fine wine The Legendary Roots Crew get better with age… an old adage they proved to be correct with the release of both of their stellar 2010 albums, How I Got Over and Wake Up! with John Legend (the latter for which they picked up three Grammy Awards for). With December 6th fast approaching, the Philly hailing band are now preparing to release their official lucky thirteenth body of work and their first ever concept album, undun.

After wetting our insatiable appetites for fresh new Roots Crew music, a few weeks ago, with their Big K.R.I.T assisted single “Make My” and shortly after teasing us with a preview of the LP’s front cover via a Tweet, sent out by ?uestlove, the band finally unveiled the official artwork of the project that is said to be heavily influenced by orchestral chamber music. Below is official behind the scenes footage of the band’s recent photo shoot for the project as well as brief description of the album. December 6th… cant come soon enough!

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.
