The Revelations – “I Forgot To Be Your Lover” | New Music

Brooklyn-based soul band The Revelations have released a new recording of William Bell’s 1968 classic“I Forgot to be Your Lover” for RZA‘s soundtrack to The Man with the Iron Fists.

The Revelations, who are fronted by Tre Williams, contributed to the backing tracks of four other songs on the soundtrack, but this is very much their moment in the limelight. Having worked extensively with RZA in the past four years to produce two Wu-Tang Clan compilation albums, they have been trusted with creating a new cover of a major Stax Records hit.

For a group who see themselves as “advocates of classic soul for the hip hop generation”, the choice makes plenty of sense. You may remember the stirring strings of “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” from Jaheim’s R&B cover, or from Ludacris’ introspective “Growing Pains”, but this is a more faithful tribute to the original track. This time Tre Williams lends his exquisite, vintage vocals to William Bell’s ballad, which charted at No.45 on the US Hot 100 back in 1968, but left a lasting impression on various different genres of music.

The Man with the Iron Fists soundtrack and score will be released on the 23rd October via Soul Temple Records/STAX/RED distribution. You can expect to hear contributions from the Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, The Black Keys, Corinne Bailey Rae, Wiz Khalifa, Talib Kweli, Pusha T and more.

The film itself, which RZA writes, directs and stars in, is set for release on November 2nd.
