Stevie Wonder to receive Icon Award at 2012 Billboard Music Awards | Music News

Legendary singer, songwriter and all-around amazing musician Stevie Wonder will be honored with the prestigious Icon Award at next weekend’s Billboard Music Awards, Billboard reports.

Since signing his first record deal with Motown predecessor Tamla Records at age 11, Wonder, now 61, has released 23 studio albums, amassed a staggering 22 Grammy Awards, 32 number one singles and has sold more than 100 million units. Several of his songs — including “Ribbon in the Sky,” “I Just Called To Say I Love You,” “Superstition” and “Happy Birthday” — and albums — like Songs In the Key of Life and Hotter Than July — are beloved around the globe. He has also become one of the most celebrated artists in music history, having been enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and having received several Lifetime Achievement Awards in both the U.S. and France.

What’s more amazing is that, even after 50 years in the business, Wonder shows no signs of stopping or slowing down.

His last studio album, A Time to Love, was released in 2005 and reached the number two spot on the U.S. R&B charts. Wonder still performs his iconic catalog across the globe, and was recently named headliner of this year’s Bestival music festival in the UK’s Isle of Wight.

Aside from Wonder’s Icon Award, the 2012 Billboards will also feature a high-profile roster of presenters including Brandy and Monica, Lil’ Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Natasha Bedingfield, Gladys Knight, Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado and more. As we reported last month, British songstress Adele leads all award finalists with nods in 18 categories, while pop duo LMFAO is second with 17. The full list of finalists can be viewed here.

The 2012 Billboard Music Awards will air live May 20 at 8pm EST from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
