In case any of you didn’t already know, I’m a massive fan of Smoke DZA. Whilst the East Coast rapper’s recent claim to be King of New York (check out his K.O.N.Y. tape here) might seem a little bit ridiculous to some, ever since he’s claimed that role for himself, his music has had that winning combination of gravitas and angst. If he’s a usurper in a rap game full of them, he’s one who’s ready to show there’s no smoke without fire.

The freestyle below, recorded for an upcoming collaborative tape between clothing brand SPSKMEN, DJ Wally Sparks and The Smoking Section, sees him bring that lyrical fire for all to witness. Over bouncy, almost tropical sounding production, the Kushed God addresses Hurricane Sandy and slandering haters and claims it’s his turn to shine, asking the following question: “If I ain’t the King then I wanna know why?”
