Smiley Culture press conference held in Brixton following police raid death [Video]

The family of UK reggae pioneer Smiley Culture held a press conference in Brixton, London on March 17 regarding the suspicious events surrounding his death two days prior on March 15 during a raid by police. It has been confirmed that Smiley Culture, “died of a single stab wound to the heart during a police raid at his home,” according to a post-mortem examination’s findings.

“He was a British icon, not a black icon. He was bigger than just us. He was British and he was a worldwide celebrity,” said Smiley’s nephew, Merlin Emmanuel .

“Will you please stop quoting anonymous police sources painting Smiley in the worst possible manner,” Lee Jasper (Chair of the London Race and Criminal Justice Consortium/former Senior Policy Advisor on Equalities to the Mayor of London) urged journalists.

“I want the press to understand something. This [brother] touched all of us with his music, as an individual, as a person,” said fellow Saxon Sound member, Tippa Irie.

Both Lee Jasper and Merlin Emmanuel urged people not to do or say anything that may distract media’s attention as one man’s passion spilled over, the tension reminiscent of previous decades in the UK where tensions between police and the black community were rife.
