Smiler : Get Familiar

Like a number of UK emcees that emerge from the underground to achieve mainstream recognition, South East London rapper Smiler has been putting the work in since his first mixtape offering in 2007 and bubbling on the underground throughout, through to his follow up in 2010 entitled Clarity.

In good company from early on having parred with the likes of Tinie Tempah and worked with Wiley and Manga of UK collective Roll Deep, Smiler’s influences of US hip hop has shone through from the very start combining his mix of clever wordplay expressing his reality, the clarity in his voice and undeniable confidence.

“When you’re coming from a socially deprived background you get to see things from the ground level. That’s what I personify, that’s what I’m all about. I wasn’t born with money…” he explains. “So I went back to the essence. I spoke about the street, I spoke about poverty, I spoke about robberies.” This uniqueness earned him attention of Radio 1’s chief tastemaker Zane Lowe for his radio and club banger track, “Enza.”

Alongside impressive radio support he also showcased his ability to bring the confidence on the track with an acoustic performance of “Spender”. Sampling the unlikely “Big Spender” by Shirley Bassey shows us the variety of his appeal, going on to work with dubstep producer Jakwob [whose musical roster includes Matisyahu, Katie Melua, Little Boots Ellie Goulding, Empire of the Sun and M.I.A.] on the track “Right Beside You.”

Now having inked a fresh deal with Warner Bro-signed Smiler continues his journey in 2012 linking up with one of the UK’s best lyricists, the chart topping Wretch 32 for “Delorean”; as produced by acclaimed producer Nutty P, who lends his signature hard hitting backdrop with Lady Leshurr on the remix.

Mixing his creativity with the essence of UK rap, Smiler allows us enough of his charismatic lyrical flow and contentment on a beat in anticipation of his debut album due for release later this year. Staying loyal to himself with his careful picks of production and collaborations with his peers, he promises to take us on a musical journey and give the very best of himself.
