Seun Kuti discusses his father’s legacy, mainstream Hip-Hop + more [Video]

My mission is to change the world of music… positively.

There are many similarities between legendary musical prophets Bob Marley and Fela Kuti. Besides blessing the world with the politically-driven social commentary in their music — which continues to touch the hearts of and influence people around the world — both gentlemen also blessed the world with children, many of whom have gone on to create influential music in their own right.

Through Bob and Fela’s work, fans of their music have (unconsciously) developed a closeness with many of their offspring with the slight (and somewhat unfair) hope that they can produce music that can make us feel what their fathers made us feel. With this comes a level of pressure — a topic their children have individually touched on in the past — that only people in their positon can truly relate to.

A few months ago, the good folks over at Out Da Box TV caught up with Fela’s youngest son, Seun Kuti. During their insightful sitdown, Seun discussed a wide range of topics including the pressures of living up to his father’s great name, becoming the frontman of Fela’s Egypt 80 [Click here for US tour dates], what he hopes to achieve with his music, Hip-Hop and much more.
