Romain Virgo live dub session at BoomStation [Video]

Radio jock Lee Major challenged highly-touted newcomer Romain Virgo to perform over an old-school dub version to see if he’s capable of riding a vintage riddim — in this case, dub originator King Tubby‘s dub version of Horace Andy‘s “Zion Gate” — while on radio trips promoting his sophomore album, The System.

Dubplate’s are a vital piece of weaponry stretching back decades in the reggae/dancehall world. Sound systems grouping to compete fiercely against each other with the rarest, original and custom tunes for forwards (big reaction from crowd) has long been a major attraction for music aficionados. The 21-year-old singer brings the ’70s classic to current day, cleverly reworking lyrics from “Who Feels It Knows It” from his self-titled debut album into a sound clash-competing tune.
