President Obama, Puffy, Jay-Z & Will Smith pay their respects to the late Heavy D [Video]

The life of the late great Heavy D was celebrated at a private funeral ceremony on Friday, November 18 at the Grace Baptist Church in the The Overweight Lover’s hometown of Mount Vernon, New York. Many members of the Hip Hop community, including [Heavy D’s first cousin and one of his pall bearers] Pete RockDiddy, Jay-ZWill Smith, Queen Latifah, Russell SimmonsMary J. Blige and former Heavy D & the Boyz group members, DJ Eddie F (pall bearer) and DJ G-Wiz (pall bearer) attended the service to pay their respects to the rapper.

During the service Puffy, who during his early years in the industry was employed at Uptown Records where Heavy D spent most of his career, paid tribute to Heav stating: “he was a superstar in every sense of the word, he was larger than life.” 

Rev. Al Sharpton read a letter from President Obama that was addressed to Heavy’s 11-year-old daughter Xea Myers; “We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time,” Obama’s letter read. “He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.”

The ceremony was also attended by John Legend, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Johnny Gill. Comedian Chris Rock and Public Enemy‘s Flavor Flav attended a public wake for the rapper held a day before the funeral.
