The return of the legendary Snoop Dogg? No – another transformation. In 2013 we’re brought Snoopzilla – who has formed a new partnership with fellow West Coaster Dam Funk for the collaborative album 7 Days Of Funk.
Set for release on December 10th through Stones Throw Records, the first taster from their album is “Faden Away,” highlighting another element to Snoops’s musical creativity and is his first project with a single producer since his multi-platinum debut, Doggystyle.
“We’re the babies of the Mothership,” says Snoop. “I’ve had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He’s keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.”
Following the reggae homage of his Snoop Lion creation, Snoopzilla pays respect and homage to the legendary Bootsy Collins, also sometimes known as Bootzilla; Snoop calls himself “Snoopy Collins” on the “Faden Away” as a direct reference to his new persona.
“Snoop knew what I was thinking without me having to articulate it. That’s how you know when you gel artistically with someone,” Dam-Funk says of the duo’s synergy. “These beats were made for him and he laid down some of the smoothest harmonies and melodies I’ve ever heard. It’s hip-hop, but you can also hear what we grew up on, from Zapp to Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Patrice Rushen.”
The track does give that sweet flavour of funk, and possibly should have been released a few months earlier for a true summer jam. If the rest of the project follows in the vein of “Faden Away” then Snoopzilla may well be seen as genius. Available to purchase now via iTunes and StonesThrow, listen to “Faden Away” below.
