So here it is, the first official single (following the Styles P featuring “Not Like Them“) street warm-up from Saigon‘s upcoming album, The Greatest Story Never Told Chapter 2: Bread & Circuses on which Saigon raps and sings (or tries to sing) about a platonic relationship.

“Relafriendship” features nice, plush production (complete with looped electric guitars) and rich vocals, courtesy of G. Martin, who seems a little more eager to push things along with his girl. The singer croons “I’d be lying if I said it never crossed my mind…” but eventually comes around to the same conclusion as the rapper. “It’s just better in the end, to have you and to keep you than to love you and hurt you and leave you”, he finally admits.

Saigon stays on his best behaviour throughout, and leaves a pretty good impression. It’s refreshing to hear a rapper talk about a woman without talking just about sex. The gimmicky title makes the chorus a bit amusing, as do some of Sai’s name-drops in his second verse, but we’ll forgive him. If other rappers coined “Relafriendship” I’d probably cringe, but with Saigon it’s just an honest assessment.
