The email I just got from Canadian singer/songwriter/producer Colin Munroe reads a lot like emails I’ve periodically had to send to estranged loved ones when absorbed by work or life. “Dear Friends & Family: I’ve been gone for a little while, but I’m still here. There were some things that needed dealing with and that dealing is almost done…”
Having made a splash with his version of Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” back in 2008, the Toronto based singer followed up with a well received mixtape titled Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero, featuring the likes of Wale, Mickey Factz, Joell Ortiz, Novel, Black Milk and fellow Canadian Drake, and built anticipation for his debut album Don’t Think Less Of Me, planned for release with Motown Universal… before almost dropping off the face of the earth.
For the record: his Don’t Think Less Of Me album was “held up because of label and legal drama,” he tells SoulCulture. “I haven’t been able to release any new solo material in a year. That collection of music is still on the way.. Perhaps as an album.. Or as a series of EPs..”
As he put it in the email, “The story continues and so will the music. I hope you enjoy this small taste of what is to come. Don’t look away. Don’t think less of me.”
Perhaps I’d make better amends with my people if I also attached unexpected cover versions of Prince classics in my apologies too.. And with that, here goes Mr Munroe’s adaption of one of my all time favorite songs….
