Reks – ‘Autographs’ | Music Video

Straight outta Lawrence, Massachusetts, Reks drops the video for “Autographs,” the first single from his recently-released fifth studio album Straight, No Chaser.

Produced by fellow Lawrence native Statik Selektah (who also produced every other song on the album), “Autographs” is a throwback to an earlier time in Hip-Hop, complete with a scratched hook à la DJ Premier and a slow-tempoed, easy-to-digest soundbed crafted with the precision by which the Showoff is becoming ever more known and loved. The fact that the hook features a Beastie Boys vocal sample is probably just a coincidence, but still serves as a cool tribute to the late Adam Yauch.

The Felipe Jorge-directed video is also like a trip down memory lane, as our star MC walks down the street (who needs a Bentley?) and passes out his music by hand (Soundcloud, shmoundcloud.) before finally landing at a record store (iTunes who?) to sign a few autographs.

A video that’s not over-directed for a song that’s not over-produced — and both are still dope enough to stand alongside any of their respective, big budget, super-produced peers. Proof that, sometimes, less really is more.

And Reks isn’t done releasing music this year. He’s dropping a collaborative LP with Florida-based producer Numonics called REBELutionary on July 24th. In the meantime, pick up Straight, No Chaser here.
