Marcus Collins – “Mercy” | Music Video

It’s been the best part of six month since Liverpudlian Marcus Collins finished runner-up in 2011’s X-Factor UK and I’m still not entirely sure what to make of him. Frankly, I wasn’t a huge fan of Collins during the show – his vocals were undeniably slick, but his performances regularly failed to connect with me and I found him boring. After losing out to Little Mix at the end of last year, it seemed as though he was cynically rushing out a half-arsed project with the release of his self-titled debut album so soon after the end of the show. With that in mind, it came as a shock when, even with low expectations, I finally heard his first single, a cover of The White Stripes‘ “Seven Nation Army” and genuinely enjoyed it.

Collins’ second single “Mercy”, an original song which he co-wrote, is equally as disarmingly impressive. It’s an upbeat, pop-soul number and as such is pretty predictable, but his vocal performance is laden with personality and lifts the track beyond formulaic “vintage soul” territory. Taken from his top ten album which dropped in March, it’s a light, catchy and fun record that I’m loving despite myself.
