Fat Freddy’s Drop – “Blackbird” | Music Video

New Zealand group Fat Freddy’s Drop have piqued the interest of many over the last decade with their unique blend of Dub, Reggae, Blues and Soul. June 2013 saw the release of the seven-piece band’s award-winning third album Blackbird, which topped the New Zealand charts, and almost a year on the band have now released a deluxe edition of Blackbird, featuring a whopping eight extra tracks, along with an animated video for the album’s third single and title track.

Musically, the song starts off with a latin vibe before taking us on a reggae-influenced journey, a barrage of horns weaving in and out of the instrumental whenever Joe Dukie isn’t delivering the rather paranoid message of being watched by a blackbird. Complimenting this journey, the video (directed by Jon Baxter) depicts a 3D modelled and animated Blackbird’s flight through what looks like purgatory. During the horn vamp towards the end of the piece a number of blackbirds, tinged with colours verging on psychedelic, continue their flight in never-ending blackness.
