MOBO Awards 2010 Winners

Tonight the 15th Annual MOBO Awards took place in Liverpool’s Echo Arena, UK. The MOBO [Music Of Black Origin] Awards was established as a British platform to celebrate the achievements of black music. While that seems not to be the main ethos any longer, the show still highlights artists in categories which are under-represented by the mainstream British media.

This year was all about awards-newcomer Tinie Tempah, who took home two of the four nominations he was up for, and pop group JLS, who won two of the most prominent awards of the night, “Best UK Act” and “Best Album”. Plan B took home the gong for “Best UK R&B/Soul Act”, Jamaican singer Gyptian scooped “Best Reggae Act” and veteran singer Billy Ocean received the “Lifetime Achievement” award. Most awards on the night are voted for by the general public.

Interestingly, JLS also delivered (in my opinion) the best performance of the night with Travie McCoy, providing the hook and chorus of Travie’s Bruno Mars assisted single, “Billionaire” – and they sang live. Another noteworthy performance was Tinchy Stryder‘s closing set which featured Giggs, Tinie Tempah, Devlin and Professor Green.

Beyond the aforementioned performances, I personally found the show underwhelming. However, twitter-commentary always makes award-show watching very entertaining. Read Marvin Sparks twitter wrap down of the show, and follow SoulCulture on twitter.
