Meshell Ndegeocello f/ Valerie June – ‘Be My Husband’ | New Music

Meshell Ndegeocello has been making critically-acclaimed music since her debut album Plantation Lullabies was released nearly 20 years ago. The acclaimed artist will be releasing her tenth LP on October 9th, and to mark this milestone Meshell has decided to honour a woman who stands as one of the greatest singer-songwriters and political activists of the 20th century, Nina Simone.

Ndegeocello’s genre-defying music and strong political activism has clearly been inspired by Simone, and the album, titled Pour Une Âme Souveraine: A Dedication to Nina Simone, will feature artists like Sinead O’Connor, Cody ChestnuTT, Lizz WrightTracy Wannomae and Toshi Reagon helping her pay homage.

In celebration of the album release, Meshell has shared her cover of Simone’s classic, “Be My Husband,” on which she allows singer-songwriter Valerie June to take on most of the vocal work, adding her voice only to the harmonies of the rich chorus. They take what was a percussive-led rhymthic march and create something far more melodic and full, whilst retaining the driving force of the original.
