Meek Mill is a better rapper than most. His Dreams & Nightmares is second on my October-albums-I’m-looking-forward-to list; behind Kendrick Lamar but above A$AP Rocky and a whole host of others. When Mill gets going, he’s one of the most ferocious out there.
Here he slows it down a little for a freestyle in his hometown of Philly, after appearing there with his label mates for Jay Z‘s Made in America Festival. Sitting on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and competing slightly with a Nero/Skrillex track playing in the background), he spits some wisdom off the top, something we don’t see very often any more.
Whilst these aren’t the most complicated bars, they work well enough- no non-sequiturs to fill out lines here. Slowly but surely Meek lets us in on his success and what it means to him, with nods to his dead father, DJ Drama and DJ Clue, amongst others. The best line? “We in Philly shooting a movie but this ain’t no Will Smith.” I think that pretty much sums Meek up. Check the freestyle out below:
Dreams & Nightmares drops on October 30th via Warner Music Group. Pre-order here.
