LONDON EVENT: NNEKA @ CARGO, LONDON – 23rd July 2009

It’s been over a year since I first saw Nneka perform on stage; I left the show aglow. It was at the same venue she returns to this month – Cargo, London on July 23rd 2009. Throwing around genres to describe her only goes so far; I’d call Nneka a blend of afro-pop, soul, R&B, with  tints of reggae and Hip Hop in some songs. But ultimately, she’s a paradoxically powerful and vulnerable spirit with unique stage presence.

She’s well worth catching live whether you’ve already been convinced by her albums or if you’re just curious what the buzz is about. Neither obsessed with singing about love nor excessively championing social causes, Nneka rides an endearing balance of character, experience and self-awareness with powerfully written songs – such as “Heartbeat” which drops on August 24th, the same day as the UK release of her album No Longer At Ease.
