Lenny Kravitz talks ‘Mama Said’ deluxe reissue | Music News

In an interview with Billboard.com, rocker Lenny Kravitz discusses his experience creating the deluxe, double-disc reissue of his 1991 opus Mama Said, as well as the surprising reactions he gets from people since his turn in the blockbuster film The Hunger Games.

Twenty-one years ago, on the heels of his successful debut album “Let Love Rule,” Kravitz’s sophomore set Mama Said gave him his first placement on the U.S. Top 40 chart before going on to sell over 3 million copies worldwide. Despite — and perhaps because of — the success, the 47-year-old musician calls that early era “a crazy time.”

“My ex-wife (actress Lisa Bonet) and I were going through issues. I just had my child the year before (‘Let Love Rule’ came out). I was adjusting to success and…fame. It was a lot to deal with,” he tells Billboard. “I ended up kind of going into hibernation, ’cause at that point I went through a pretty serious depression. I just let all these feelings out onto the songs. It was very cathartic for me.”

Kravitz says that putting together the extensive deluxe edition of Mama Said took him back to that time. The project is a double-disc set boasting 15 previously unreleased cuts and a disc full of bonus tracks including a number of rare demos, remixes and live performances.

And while he’s no stranger to being recognized, Kravitz says the recognition he gets for playing “Cinna,” Catniss Aberdeen’s stylist and advisor in box office smash The Hunger Games, has been a bit different.

“It’s crazy. I was in a bookstore in Paris and there were all these 10-year-old girls in the store, giggling. I finally came out and they said, ‘You’re ‘Hunger Games!’ and I nodded and kept walking and they started screaming. They had no idea who I was other than the guy in ‘The Hunger Games.’ … It’s a trip.”
