Lauryn Hill weighs in on Nicki Minaj pulling out of Hot 97 Summer Jam | Music News

With yesterday’s Summer Jam surprise — which involved some disrespectful (or simply straightforward, depending on your viewpoint) comments from Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg about “Starships” and a subsequent no-show from the Young Money Queen Bee Nicki Minaj — still stirring the Twittersphere today, Lauryn Hill, who performed at the event alongside Nas, released a statement via her Twitter account to share some of her wisdom on the issues at hand.

The former Fugees star cleared up rumours that she was scheduled as a guest artist on Nicki’s set and then claimed artists should “find a better way to commercially exploit music” while holding the same integrity and receiving the same respect.

“No disrespect to Nicki, but I need to clear up an inaccuracy. I was not scheduled to be a special guest on her set at Summer Jam, I was invited by Nas to perform with him. I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity. We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!! Ms. Lauryn Hill”

Taking to Twitter also, Nicki then shared an open response to Lauryn Hill’s words, stating the iconic emcee would have performed on stage with her, seeing as Nas was scheduled as a support act for her planned set, and revealed fellow femcee and former member of The Firm Foxy Brown would have later joined.
